Making hats the "cake in a box" way!

Sometimes life gets super busy and we don't have time to do everything from scratch. Just like those times when you bake a cake from a box mix, it's ok to take shortcuts every now and then!

For this adorable hat, we are going "pre made" by purchasing an already sewn hat (with matching gloves) I got mine from Walmart for about $3.

Get those gloves out because we are going to use all of the fingers for different parts of the Owl Hat.

Cut off the thumbs to use as ears.

Now set them aside.

Next, sew the pinky finger and the ring finger together.

It's easy if you hold them together and stitch up the side.

Cut off the two connected fingers.

Repeat with the pinky and ring finger on the other glove.

Now you have bunny ears/a peace symbol left. Haha.

Lay them on top of each other with the top fingers split so they are on the outside.

Cut them both off of the remaining glove. You want the fingers to still be connected though.

Stitch them together.

Now you should have all of the above pieces.

Above is where all of the pieces should go.

Before attaching them to the hat, you can stuff them with the remaining glove scraps.

Now sew them on tucking all of the open loose seams in as you go.

Ears all done!

Now sew your wings and tail on.

For the eyes, I cut out the white from an old tee shirt, and I got the centers from some black felt.

It's just like sewing on a patch.

I glued the centers on with a hot glue gun.

"Sew" cute! ;)

I sewed my beak into a cone, but you can just cut yellow felt into a triangle too.

Stitch it right in-between the eyes.

All done!

June was so excited because she thought I made her a "duck" hat! Haha... she thinks all birds are ducks! ;)

At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to add a tail in the back because it might look a little over the top. But then I was like, "You're making an little kid owl hat, you NEED to go over the top!" And I LOVE how it turned out.

I took her out to go see Daddy after work and we played by the ocean.

She likes wearing it backwards or to the side... silly kid!

I can't tell you how hard it was to get a picture of her standing still in this hat... most of the trip was more like this! Haha!

And then she accidentally threw her beloved ball into the ocean and daddy went and got it.

Have a beautiful day and enjoy the fall weather!
